  1. Re-framing African narratives by highlighting local social enterprises’ African leadership.
  2. Building a cooperative ecosystem between governments and social entrepreneurs for stronger social enterprises through collaboration and well-being initiatives.
  3. Diversifying funding to directly reach African-led organizations (50%) without intermediaries, especially youth and gender-focused organizations.
  4. Boosting social sector employment by 10% through workforce development programs and career counseling to attract African talent and young people.
  5. Providing practical skills and knowledge to social enterprises to scale and meet funder accountability needs.

With the proper policies and partnerships, social entrepreneurs in Africa can drive an inclusive and sustainable future.

Ellen Chilemba

Leading our lineup is the accomplished Ellen Chilemba, who at just 22 years old, has already established herself as a force to be reckoned with.

At the young age of 17, Ellen founded Tiwale in 2012 with the aim of uplifting women from poverty through education and empowerment initiatives. Tiwale provides workshops, vocational training, and interest-free micro-finance loans to equip women with the necessary skills and resources to succeed.

The impact of Tiwale has been significant, having already trained hundreds of women and helping them establish thriving businesses.

Forbes has recognized Ellen’s impressive achievements, dubbing her a powerhouse and naming her as one of “Africa’s Most Promising Entrepreneurs Under 30”.

Jean Bosco Nzeyimana

Introducing Jean Bosco Nzeyimana, hailing from Rwanda.

At just 19 years old, Jean envisioned a solution to the waste problem in his community by processing it into eco-friendly and cost-effective fuel.

His company, Habona Ltd, collects and sorts through waste to produce briquettes, organic fertilizers, and bio-gas with the goal of reducing reliance on charcoal as a source of energy.

Nzeyimana has been recognized for his innovative business ventures, winning numerous awards such as the Top Young Entrepreneur of Rwanda and the African Innovation Prize.

Barclay Okari

Barclay Okaris’ start-up was inspired by his volunteer work teaching at a girls’ high school in Western Kenya, where he saw first-hand the struggle of girls missing classes due to lack of access to sanitary products.

This heartbreaking realization led him to create AFRIpads – a low-cost, reusable, and washable sanitary pad. Through his company, Impact Africa Industries, Okari has sold and distributed over one million Safi Pads to low-income women in Uganda and Kenya.

Starting with just a $1,500 loan from his parents, Barclay has transformed his idea into a product with a significant impact on the lives of women in need.

These social entrepreneurs are just a few examples of the many innovative and impactful leaders in Africa today. They are proof that social entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for creating positive change in Africa, and that Africa’s future is bright with the rise of this new generation of leaders.
